Announcing Divisions for HCLL's Spring 2020 Seasons

Spring 2020 will usher in a few changes to our divisions. The board has spent a lot of time taking a look at the results of the past few seasons and decided on the following divisions for Spring 2020.

  • Tee Ball
  • Machine Pitch (baseball only)
  • Rookie League
  • Minor League
  • Major League
  • Junior League
  • Senior League

There are a few noteworthy changes included in these new divisions.

Minor & Major League

The biggest change will be how we handle our softball and baseball Minor and Major Leagues.

12 year-old players will play Major League while 9-11 year-old players will be eligible for both the Minor and Major Leagues.

The way this will work is that once signups and player evaluations have been completed the HCLL Board will decide how many Major League teams to create. All 12 year olds will be added to these teams and then the Major League team rosters will be filled out by allowing the Major League team coaches to draft players from all available 9-11 year olds. Next, the Minor League coaches will draft their teams from all available 9-11 year old players.

Rookie League & Machine Pitch

The other noteworthy change this coming season will be the addition of a new machine-pitch division.

Last year, our baseball Rookie League used machines for part of the season and then used kid-pitching for part of the season. However, we saw how much our players and parents enjoyed machine pitch and wanted to give our 6 and 7 year old baseball players a chance to play a full season hitting off the machine.

In addition, as a Board we felt our 8 year olds were not as prepared for inter-region play as they could have been because they had spent less time playing kid-pitch than the surrounding counties.

Adding a machine-pitch division will allow us to get the best of both worlds: an entire season hitting off the machine for our younger players, and a full season of kid-pitch for our 8 year olds.

Why Is HCLL Creating New Divisions?

As a board, when establishing our divisions, it’s our goal to accomplish three things:

  • We want our players and their parents to have the best possible experience.
  • We want to encourage the development of softball/baseball skills by putting players of similar abilities in the same division.
  • We want our players to be as well-prepared as possible for participation in postseason tournament play.

As a board, we looked at the results over the past few seasons and we believe that these changes will help move our program closer to all three of these goals.
